Bill would give people a chance to donate to deaf and hard of hearing
The state House passed legislation (HB 2549) introduced by Rep. Joe Hohenstein that would give people using PennDOT’s website the opportunity to donate money to the Office for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Anyone using PennDOT’s website to renew a driver’s license, ID card or vehicle registration would have the option to donate $5 to ODHH. In addition to ODHH, applicants will have the option to contribute $5 to Shriners Hospitals for Children, the Fire Company Grant Program or the Emergency Medical Services Grant Program.
“It is estimated that more than 1 million Pennsylvanians live with deafness and hearing loss,” Hohenstein said. “Unfortunately, resources for assistive technology and communication supports are not available for many in the deaf and hard-of-hearing communities. ODHH provides that support with hearing aids and other technology, which is why it is important we provide people using PennDOT’s website the ability to donate to this critical cause.”
This bill heads to the Senate for consideration. ••
PA House passes bill on horse racing licensure
The state House passed legislation (HB 2625) introduced by Rep. Sean Dougherty that would modernize fingerprinting and background check requirements for applicants seeking licensure through Pennsylvania’s Horse Racing Commission to meet FBI requirements. The FBI has requested changes to be made to the definitions used in the racing act to better clarify who needs to be fingerprinted. All applicants to the Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission for a license relating to the care or training of horses, racing, wagering, security or the management of licensed racing entities must submit their fingerprints to the Pennsylvania State Police for a state criminal history record check. The State Police then submits these fingerprints to the FBI for the purpose of verifying the identity of the applicant and obtaining a current record of any criminal arrests and convictions.
“Horse racing is a significant, multi-million-dollar industry here in Pennsylvania,” Dougherty said. “In order to improve accountability of the racing industry, we should move quickly to ensure that applicants to the Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission will continue to be fingerprinted and verified by the FBI.”
This bill now heads to the Pennsylvania Senate for consideration. ••
