Funding benefits children’s future

As a retired Philadelphia public school teacher, it should come as no surprise that I am delighted with Mark Zimmaro’s report on the awarding of nearly half a million state dollars to schools in South Philly (“$460K in grants to benefit schools, education,” Sept. 9).

Of course Democratic state Rep. Elizabeth Fiedler is overjoyed by this news. She represents District 184, which covers parts of South Philly. That includes the neighborhood of Southwark School, which just got a grant of $250,000.

The report includes other grants to local schools, including Furness High School and Vare-Washington School. It is just a pleasure to learn that our state government is finally coming through with financial support for education in our neighborhood. About time.

Of course we must appreciate and encourage more efforts by state representatives like Elizabeth Fiedler to continue pushing such financial benefits for the sake of our children’s future.
