South Philadelphia’s historic Bok Building became a cultural classroom in July as hundreds of wine lovers, chefs, creators and hospitality professionals gathered for the eighth annual Wine & Culture Fest, hosted by The Hue Society.

The festival, centered on the theme “Summer School,” used wine, food and music to explore heritage and culture while challenging traditional ideas about who belongs in the wine industry.

The City of Philadelphia recognized the festival with an official citation from Mayor Cherelle Parker, calling Wine & Culture Fest “one of the most culturally centered wine festivals in the United States.” The citation also recognized founder Tahiirah Habibi for her leadership in promoting economic inclusion and excellence in hospitality.

“We are teaching people where wine already lives in their own bodies, memories and lives,” Habibi said. “Seeing our community gather in Philadelphia to learn, connect and celebrate without shrinking themselves or conforming to traditional standards shows that when you create spaces with intentionality, culture leads the way.”

Among the highlights was the R.I.C.E. experience, a global culinary showcase celebrating the heritage of rice throughout the diaspora and pairing the food with wines. Chef panels featured chefs Nana Wilmot and Chaz Brown, while a fireside chat with Jade Novah offered another featured conversation.

The event also featured a VIP Rosé Lounge, educational wine masterclasses and a vendor showcase highlighting black-owned wine, spirits and lifestyle brands.

Festival partners included VinePair, Jackson Family Wines, Angel’s Envy, Sandeman, the Culinary Careers Program and the Philadelphia Wine School, which announced community scholarship opportunities during the event. ••
