What started as a simple idea to help local Shih Tzu owners connect has quickly become one of Philadelphia’s most heartwarming dog communities.
Philly Shih Tzus is celebrating its first anniversary after recently hosting its 10th official meet-up at Uptown Dogs Daycare. In just one year, the community has grown to more than 150 members and pups and built a social media following of nearly 1,000 followers. Each meet-up continues to welcome new dogs and owners while bringing back familiar furry faces, creating lasting friendships for both pets and people.
Founded by Philadelphia resident Jen Maher, Philly Shih Tzus was created to bring together owners of one of the world’s most beloved breeds. Since the very first gathering, the community has continued to grow with each monthly event.
While many cities host one-time or occasional Shih Tzu gatherings in local parks, Philly Shih Tzus has taken a different approach. The group hosts monthly meet-ups throughout the year (taking a break during the winter months), giving owners and their dogs regular opportunities to reconnect, build friendships and strengthen the community. That consistency has helped transform the group from a single event into one of the region’s largest and most active breed-specific dog communities.
“Watching this community grow has been incredibly rewarding,” said Maher. “When we hosted our first meet-up, I never imagined we’d be celebrating our 10th event just one year later. Every month we meet new Shih Tzus and their owners, and it’s become so much more than a dog meet-up — it’s a community.”
For members, the impact goes far beyond giving their dogs a chance to play.
“Joining Philly Shih Tzus has been one of the best things we’ve done for both us and our dog. Every meet-up feels like a reunion. It’s amazing to see the dogs recognize each other while we’ve built friendships with people we never would have met otherwise,” said Tamara Ferguson, a Philly Shih Tzus member.
The meet-ups are hosted at dog-friendly venues throughout the Philadelphia region and often feature giveaways, photo opportunities and partnerships with local pet-friendly businesses. The events have become a favorite outing for Shih Tzu owners looking to socialize their dogs and meet others who share their love for the breed.
The celebration comes as the group prepares for two upcoming events:
- Aug. 26 – Yappy Hour at The Logan Hotel
- Sept. 19 – Meet-up at Schuylkill River Park Small Dog Park
