The Tacony LAB Community Art Center, 6918 Torresdale Ave., recently hosted a 24-hour Knit-A-Thon.
The fiber fest began at noon on Nov. 16 and continued around the clock until noon the next day. Participants, youths and adults, were given hands-on instruction and took part in knitting, crocheting and weaving. Some donated their knitted hats and other items to The Block Gives Back for distribution to the needy, and all went home with kits to continue their new hobby.
The idea came from Tacony LAB teaching artist Lucia Alber, who recalls seeing a knit-a-thon on an episode of The Gilmore Girls.
The Block Gives Back grilled free hot dogs for participants, and the Tacony CDC provided pizza, pretzels, doughnuts and coffee.
Tacony LAB held a raffle to raise money for Jenkintown-based Luv2Knit, whose mission is to help others learn the therapeutic arts of knitting, crochet and other fiber media so they can experience the meditative qualities of these fiber arts.
Tacony LAB welcomes the community to attend a holiday maker market on Friday, Dec. 6, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. There will be artist and craft vendors, refreshments and free photos with Santa.
Meanwhile, The Block Gives Back hopes to raise $15,000 on Giving Tuesday, which will be on Dec. 3. Donations can be made at https://www.theblockgivesback.org/.
The Block will hold its annual End of the Year Jawn on Dec. 14, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Maken North Building, 3525 I St. The group will distribute winter necessities, hygiene products, toys and more. ••
