The 2024 high school football season will officially kick off this weekend as three South Philly institutions will take the field.

Expectations will once again be high for Neumann-Goretti as the defending Catholic League Blue Division champion will look to build on a 10-2 season. The Saints were defeated in the quarterfinal round of the state playoffs last season and will be attempting to further their progress this campaign, which includes its normal PCL slate, as well as interesting nonleague matchups with Pope John Paul II and Tottenville of New York. The Saints open the season by hosting Roman Catholic on Friday at 7 p.m. at the South Philly Supersite.

After dropping their first two games of the season, Academy at Palumbo won five of its next six en route to a 5-5 season, which included a berth in the Public League playoffs. The Griffins will open their season on Friday by hosting Samuel S. Fels at 3 p.m. at the South Philly Supersite. An Oct. 4 meeting with Southern looms large for South Philly bragging rights as the Rams won last year’s contest, 20-0.

Southern, which finished 4-6 last season, will dive into its PPL schedule, which includes an opener with Martin Luther King before facing Frankford, Roxborough and Kensington, among others.

A Thanksgiving Day tradition with Neumann-Goretti will continue on Nov. 28 as the two longtime South Philly schools will reunite at the South Philly Supersite at 10 a.m.
