Way to go, Saints
To a graduate of Saint Maria Goretti High School’s first class in 1958, it felt amazing to read Mark Zimmaro’s report about today’s male student-athletes winning a state baseball championship (“Saints are state champs,” June 19). So my old all-girls high school has come a long way since it merged with Saint John Neumann High School for boys in the fall of 2004.
Back in the day, our all-female athletes participated in games like basketball or soccer but never baseball. I personally just stuck with the glee club. So of course there was a major cultural change when the school became co-ed. I was just glad to be part of the foundation of a unique educational experience. We established every academic, athletic and cultural tradition that future students would experience. That was altered dramatically by the change to co-ed learning, including the introduction of male-dominant sports like baseball.
Of course I want to congratulate these young athletes for winning their third state title in school history. It is my sincere hope that stories like this will inspire more young people and their families to enroll in this very special Diocesan high school for boys and girls. Go, Saints!
