Year of the Snake

The Chinese New Year will be celebrated on Jan. 29, marking the Year of the Snake.

This year the zodiac sign of the “Snake” represents “financial and professional obstacles, and to overcome these obstacles, the Chinese people need to be resilient.”

Unfortunately that very obstacle has already come to fruition to the Chinese community when the slithering snakes known as Mayor Cherelle Parker and the City Council members voted to bulldoze Chinatown and build a basketball stadium, forcing the Chinese community and businesses to relocate.

Ironically, back in 2022 in China, furious Shanghai residents clashed with hazmat-suited police as people were forced and dragged out of their homes to make their homes quarantine centers for COVID-19 patients, because of the overload in hospitals.

And it’s not any different now as protesters here in Philly are being arrested and dragged away from City Hall as Philly Council voted to approve the Sixers’ arena proposal.

Like the Chinese activist known as “The Tank Man,” who during the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, stood defiant in front of a military tank, it’s time for the Chinese community to be resilient and stand defiant in the same way against the bulldozers and the snakes of City Hall.

A welcome sight

I know we all have complaints about the city and in particular things getting done in our neighborhoods. I am pleased to say I am seeing leaf pickup on our one-way street. Not once, but at least 2 times. They just came down our street now. Thank you to whomever is in charge of this, and to the city workers who did such a thorough job. I do not remember ever seeing this, and I did not think we were included on the map they have online.

It is nice to see our tax dollars at work.

A fervent prayer

I know, you knew I was going to “pen” this prayer disguised as a letter to the editor.

Sorry to say many of earth’s inhabitants think you’re not doing a very good job. It appears you are disregarding your own rules dictated in every religion. You give to all the freedom of free choice but why is it only for the perpetrators; don’t all want the free choice to die of old age. Why are many of our wishes disregarded? Throughout history there have been too many wars, murders, rapes and injustices ordered by too many insane momentary leaders who are so happy committing these crimes. In today’s world it has not abated. May I request you “step up” and assist all helpless victims before many turn into atheists. Admittedly, we all have failed miserably to help ourselves and our fellow citizens. My problem is I read your book, “Ethics of our Fathers,” and feel extremely frustrated. Please practice what you preach.

Consumer power

Many people who retired in the last 15 to 20 years tell us that they have been watching how the loss of jobs to foreign countries has not been favorable to America’s economic future. They remember when skilled jobs were plentiful, and American goods were widely available on store shelves, and how they often worked overtime to keep up with the demand of producing, shipping and selling products proudly made in the United States of America.

Today, many Americans feel that our national elected leaders have been too focused on a global economy and have not been addressing the harm that outsourcing American jobs has caused America’s economy, America’s workforce and how it added to America’s growing national debt. Americans agree it is up to national elected leaders to be the leading force we need in order to restore America’s economy and America’s prosperity.

To help get America’s economy back on track, everyone is urged to contact their local, state and national elected officials to refocus on finding ways to assist businesses to restore American-made products and more jobs for American workers rather than remaining silent while more industries and jobs are relocated to foreign countries.

The Buy American Made Campaign has been helping people understand that America’s consumers have more power than they realize as they direct their spending power toward American-made products and supporting businesses that offer American-made products.

Your participation is very important and you are asked to spread the word to others and ask them to look for, ask for and purchase American-made products everywhere possible.

Your comments and suggestions are always welcome. Email them to Michael@AmericanWorkersRadio.com.
