The need for greener energy sources

I was thrilled to read a report in last week’s Review about legislators and education leaders gathering in City Hall to celebrate the passage in Harrisburg of a new solar energy bill (“City leaders applaud passage of solar for schools”). I share the joy of lawmakers Fiedler, McClinton, Harris and others over the passage of a bill to make it easier to provide solar energy for schools across the state. This will happen through a grant program to make possible the installation of solar panels on school grounds.

Special thanks must go to state Rep. Elizabeth Fiedler for introducing the Solar for Schools bill (HB1032), which Gov. Josh Shapiro signed into law on July 17. As the report states, it will change so much to favor our environment as well as improve education. As a grandmother, I am especially appreciative of this law that will make schools safer and cleaner while protecting the natural world.

I hope this is just the beginning of more such legislation that will increase the use of greener energy sources and the final end to poisonous fossil fuels. The future safety of our planet and especially our children depends on a clean environment, not only in schools, but in their homes and surrounding neighborhoods.

So bravo to all the Pennsylvania legislators and our governor for passing and signing this vital Solar for Schools law. May it be just the beginning.
