State Rep. Jared Solomon presented $500,000 in funding to Glitter’s Safe Steps Northeast Program during a news conference at Max Myers Recreation Center.

The funding will be used to complete street cleaning throughout Solomon’s district once per month.

Safe Steps Northeast is a 15-month initiative that will provide monthly cleanings across 515 residential blocks in neighborhoods in the 202nd Legislative District.

Jobs are open to anyone 18 and older. Workers make $25 an hour and will also aim to identify and proactively address 311 issues, abandoned cars and illegal dumping.

Solomon said it is “infuriating” to clean up, only to see trash return. He thinks Glitter will bring “a sense of community pride” to areas in his district.

Glitter will clean streets, sidewalks, curbs, sewers, storm drains, weeds and lawns.

“We are grateful for the help,” said John McMonagle, of the Community Life Improvement Program.

The initiative will complement an existing program in the district that sees commercial corridors cleaned three days a week.

Glitter was represented by founder Morgan Berman, CEO Brandon Pousley, program manager Tim LaRosee and neighborhood engagement lead Shyara Hill.

Berman has been a block captain and civic association president in South Philadelphia and wants to end the city’s reputation as “Filthadelphia.”

In addition to the partnership with Solomon, Glitter cleans more than 300 blocks in the city, with residents raising the money for the service.

“A cleaner block is a safer block,” Berman said.
