Destructive policies

Mr. James McCaffrey’s letter in the April 2 edition of the NE Times requires a response. His diatribe against “Democrats” and “demo-culture” fails to identify the programs ushered by Democrats that have benefited all Americans. They are Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Head Start, to name a few. He refers to President Biden as the “dimwit in the WH” and alludes to Mr. Biden’s delay to do anything about the border. I would like to remind Mr. McCaffrey that Sen. Lankford’s bipartisan Senate bill would have addressed many of the problems inherent in our immigration system. But, then-candidate Trump asked that passage of the bill be delayed until his election so that he could claim its benefits.

I would also like to remind Mr. McCaffrey that President Biden left Mr. Trump a healthy economy, one that rebounded from the pandemic mismanaged by Mr. Trump. In less than three months, President Trump has used an unelected but wealthy agent to invade databases in the Treasury, Social Security Administration and other agencies to which Musk has no legal right. President Trump also threatens to implement tariffs that by all economic standards will lead to a recession. His approach seems to be that of a bull in a china cabinet — damage relations with our allies, propose a new MAGA version of Manifest Destiny doctrine where we take over Canada, Greenland and condemn Ukraine to an indenture status by proposing to take over its minerals and energy resources as loan repayments with interest for the aid the U.S. has given it.

Is this the kind of destructive thinking Mr. McCaffrey suggests we should adopt?
