Project CLASSY held a community volunteer mural painting event at Mastery Charter Smedley Elementary School as part of the recent celebration of Martin Luther King Day. Smedley staff, corporate employees and others painted 14 inspirational murals that will be installed in hallways and common spaces at Smedley, 1790 Bridge St. in Frankford. The murals were designed by Deirdre Hyman, of Anointed Studio, and adhered to this year’s MLK Day of Service theme, “The Beloved Community.” Blick Art Materials donated supplies for the service project, and volunteers gathered in the gym and used a paint-by-numbers method to finish the murals.

Jade Grier, dean of students, is the founder of Project CLASSY, an after-school and community nonprofit dedicated to helping girls become positive, intelligent leaders.

Grier reached out to Global Citizen, which organized King Day of Service activities in Philadelphia, to recruit volunteers. ••
