The 8th Police District Advisory Council on Dec. 4 held a Community Awards Ceremony at the 8th Police District.
Officer Douglas Bjerring was recognized as Officer of the Month for stopping a speeding driver who ran a red light on Academy Road on Nov. 19, then arresting him when he fled. The suspect was charged with stealing the vehicle, and the owner was told his vehicle was recovered before he knew it had been stolen.
The PDAC honored community relations officer Chris Hanejko for his kindness and effort attending meetings and events and working with the PDAC.
“One of the best moves I made was Officer Hanejko’s position as community relations officer,” said Capt. Nick DeBlasis, commander of the 8th district.
The offices of state Reps. Martina White and Ed Neilson presented Bjerring, Hanejko and the community winners with citations.
Chick-fil-A, 9711 Roosevelt Blvd., was honored as a business making a positive impact.
The following members of Parkwood Patrollers received awards: Brianna Finocchiaro, Melissa Finocchiaro, Joe Finocchiaro, Joseph Nightlinger, Debbie Regan and Donna “Parkwood” Enstrom.
Mary Jane Shissler was honored for her work with Socks for the Streets.
Cassidy Donlen and Casey Donlen, 6-year-old twins, were honored for their volunteer work with Socks for the Streets, the PDAC and John Hancock Elementary School, where they are first-graders.
St. Hubert senior Erynn Geiss, in the top five in her class, was honored for academic excellence. She is a Bambie Ambassador, cheerleader, member of the cross country team and takes classes for credits at Holy Family, all while working a full-time job. ••
