East Torresdale touches on a few neighborhood issues

East Torresdale Civic Association met last week, discussing several neighborhood issues.

St. Katherine of Siena School will hold an Oktoberfest Homecoming on Sunday, Oct. 4, from 2-6 p.m. on the parish campus, 9700 Frankford Ave. There will be food trucks, a biergarten, children’s activities, music, crafters, vendors, a money wheel, basket raffles, a 50-50 and a broadcast of the Eagles vs. Rams game. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for kids and includes free beer for adults and root beer for kids.

Glen Foerd, 5001 Grant Ave., will host a Masquerade Ball on Friday, Oct. 30, at 6:30 p.m. There will be contortionists, tarot readers, jugglers, fire dancers, food, drinks, live music and mansion access. Councilman Mike Driscoll will receive the Macalester Award for his support of Glen Foerd. Visit https://www.glenfoerd.org/masquerade-ball 

Members discussed the new speed cameras on Frankford Avenue. In the Torresdale/Upper Holmesburg area, the cameras are on the 8300 and 9900 blocks of Frankford Ave.

A woman complained that the School District of Philadelphia eliminated the 19136 ZIP code from a preference list for admission to Masterman, Central, Academy at Palumbo and Carver Engineering and Science. The woman said she has reached out to local elected officials, but has received little to no response.

Shayne Gittel, an aide to state Sen. Joe Picozzi, said the office, at 12361 Academy Road, hosts a representative from the Veterans Multi-Service Center on the second Tuesday of the month. To make an appointment, call 215-281-2539.
