The Greater Bustleton Civic League last week welcomed Capt. Steven O’Brien and community relations officer Al Fiorentino, of the 7th Police District.
O’Brien told the crowd of a residential burglary on the 8400 block of Bustleton Ave. and a gunpoint robbery on the 8300 block of Loretto Ave., where an Uber driver had his money and car taken. The car was recovered in North Philadelphia.
O’Brien said there have been three arrests in recent stolen car cases. The ages of the suspects are 11, 13 and 15.
Fiorentino distributed faraday bags, which are made with materials that, among other things, help prevent car thefts by blocking the signal from your key fob so that thieves can’t pick it up. Car owners place their keys in the bags at home so thieves cannot take advantage of the push-button start option to steal the vehicle.
• State Rep.-elect Sean Dougherty said he will be opening an office at 7801-A Hasbrook Ave. in Fox Chase, the same office occupied by Rep. Kevin Boyle, whom Dougherty beat in the Democratic primary. Dougherty’s chief of staff, Viktor Kagan, also attended the meeting.
• GBCL members gave a round of applause to retiring vice president John McKeever, who attended the meeting via Zoom.
• Joan Rhodes, the former longtime GBCL treasurer, died last month.
• PennDOT, the city and SEPTA invite the public to an open house to discuss the future of Roosevelt Boulevard on Tuesday, Jan. 7, from 6-8 p.m., at American Heritage Credit Union, 2068 Red Lion Road. • The Zoning Board of Adjustment ignored GBCL’s opposition to a proposed after-school childcare in an industrial-zoned building at 260 Geiger Road and approved the proposal. Neighbors previously cited concerns about noise and congestion due to other daycares and adult care facilities in the complex. They were also concerned that the owner would operate in the summer, even when school is closed.
The ZBA sided with GBCL and approved pickleball courts at 225-273 Geiger Road.
