The Lawncrest Community Association unanimously approved a proposal to open a vehicle maintenance and repair business at 5598 Newtown Ave. (near Godfrey Avenue).
The owner operates a similar business at 31st Street and Grays Ferry Avenue in South Philadelphia.
Attorney Henry Clinton represented the business, which will also have an indoor paint booth and occasional car sales.
Work will be done in an abandoned 4,000-square-foot building. Lighting and cameras will be added. There will be four employees.
The Zoning Board of Adjustment hearing will be May 21.

• Justin DiBerardinis, executive director of the Tookany/Tacony-Frankford Watershed, invited residents to a cleanup on Saturday, April 5, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Tacony Creek Park gateway at 313 Adams Ave. DiBerardinis said the cleanup will focus on the removal of some 4,000 tires that were recently dumped in the park. There will be music and refreshments.
• State Rep. Anthony Bellmon invited people to a shredding event he is holding in partnership with U.S. Rep. Brendan Boyle on Saturday, March 29, from 10 a.m. to noon, at the Philadelphia Protestant Home, 6401 Martins Mill Road.
Bellmon told the crowd he was recently at PPH to present a check for $84,350 for a vehicle for the home to transport residents to various places.
Bellmon mentioned his assignment to the House Appropriations Committee and his selection as secretary of the Philadelphia House delegation. He invited constituents to visit his office at 7215-B Rising Sun Ave.
• Lawncrest Library, 6098 Rising Sun Ave., has finally reopened following renovations. The official grand opening will be on April 10 at 3 p.m.
• Lawncrest Community Association will meet on Thursday, April 17, at 6:30 p.m. at St. William’s Monsignor James E. Mortimer Memorial Hall, Argyle and Robbins streets. Guests will be candidates in the May 20 primary. ••
