Mayfair Third Thursdays

The Mayfair Business Improvement District and State Street Events will continue their Third Thursday Night Markets, featuring live music and vendors, from 6-9 p.m. at Frankford and Cottman avenues. Dates, themes and entertainment are Aug. 20 (Dog Days of Summer, So Easy Band) and Sept. 17 (Mayfair Irish Night, Bogside Rogues). Pet adoption at Women’s Animal Center

Women’s Animal Center, 3839 Richlieu Road in Bensalem, is a participating shelter for the 12th Annual NBCUniversal “Clear the Shelters” nationwide pet adoption event that takes place on Saturday, Aug. 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Inspire Federal Credit Union is the event partner, making adoption fees for cats, dogs and small animals free. The event will also feature complimentary refreshments, giveaways for adopters and coloring activities for kids. All shelter pets adopted from Women’s Animal Center are spayed and/or neutered, receive preventative and lifesaving vaccines and are microchipped. Bustleton Library programming

Bustleton Library, 10199 Bustleton Ave., will hold a book club meeting on Thursday, Aug. 20, at 11 a.m. The book to be discussed is Kin, by Tayari Jones. In Kin, Vernice and Annie grow up as motherless neighbors and close friends in Honeysuckle, Louisiana, but their lives diverge as they reach adulthood. Vernice, raised by a protective aunt, leaves for Spelman College, where she becomes part of an influential community of black women and confronts new experiences shaped by privilege, ambition and social inequality. Annie, driven by the desire to find the mother who abandoned her, embarks on a journey marked by instability, risk and emotional discovery, ultimately facing life-threatening circumstances. The novel explores themes of motherhood, friendship, identity and the social complexities of womanhood in the American South. Copies of the book are available to borrow.

The library will hold an Evening Book Club meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 25, at 5:30 p.m. The book to be discussed is My Friends by Fredrik Backman. Four teenagers form a deep friendship that offers them refuge from troubled home lives and inspires the creation of a mysterious painting. Twenty-five years later, Louisa, a young artist, inherits the artwork and sets out on a journey to uncover its origin. Copies of the book are available to borrow.

Curfew, underage drinking

Curfew in Philadelphia is 9:30 p.m. for anyone 13 and under and 10 p.m. for those ages 14-17. If police pick up someone for a curfew violation in the Northeast, the young person will be taken home, to the Community Evening Resource Center at 4704 Leiper St. in Frankford or to the 2nd, 7th, 8th or 15th police districts. The penalty for a curfew violation can be up to $300.

Under state law, underage drinking is a summary offense with a $500 fine for the first violation. Anyone receiving a citation for underage drinking can be asked about it on applications for jobs, college applications and appointments to military service academies. ••

Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic hires chief development officer

Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic, which operates Nazareth Hospital and five other hospitals, announced the appointment of Dia Williams Adams as its new chief development officer.

In this role, Williams Adams will lead philanthropic strategy across the three-state region’s six hospitals and associated care facilities, overseeing fundraising, donor engagement, foundation operations, planned giving and capital campaign initiatives. Working closely with executive leadership, physicians, board members, donors and community stakeholders, she will help advance the organization’s mission through philanthropic investment that supports exceptional care, innovative clinical programs, education and community outreach.

Williams Adams brings more than 20 years of leadership experience in health care philanthropy and nonprofit development. Most recently, she served as vice president of philanthropy at ChristianaCare Health System in Wilmington, Delaware.

“We are excited to welcome Dia to our executive leadership team,” said Andre A. Boyd Sr., Regional President and CEO, Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic. “Throughout her career, she has demonstrated an exceptional ability to build meaningful relationships, inspire generosity and connect donors with opportunities to make a lasting impact. As chief development officer, Williams Adams will partner with hospital and foundation leadership to strengthen donor stewardship, identify new philanthropic opportunities and enhance Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic’s culture of giving. She will also work to increase community engagement and support strategic priorities across the region.

Williams Adams earned a bachelor of science degree in Liberal Studies/Business Administration from Neumann University and a Master of Public Administration degree from Villanova University. ••

History lecture in Frankford

The Historical Society of Frankford, 1507 Orthodox St., will host a meeting and lecture on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 7:30 p.m. The speaker will be historian Jeff Denman, who will discuss his new book, Philadelphia Quakers and the American Revolution, which vividly describes the precipitous rise of the Philadelphia Quakers and their fall during the American Revolution. Denman is a retired American history and geography teacher from the Brookline Public Schools in Massachusetts. He has written widely on topics in American history. Denman holds a bachelor of science degree from the University of Maine and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Connecticut. 

The event is free and open to the public, and free off-street parking is available across Orthodox Street at Frankford Friends School. Doors open at 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be served before and after the lecture. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing.
