Silent movie at Glen Foerd
The Secret Cinema returns to Glen Foerd on Thursday, Sept. 10, for a presentation of the 1921 silent film The Blasphemer. Service will mark 9/11 anniversary
St. James Lutheran Church, at Castor Avenue and Pratt Street, invites the public to its annual service to remember the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The service to mark the 25th anniversary of the attacks is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 11. The service will include participation by police officers, firefighters and civic members. History lecture in Frankford
The Historical Society of Frankford, 1507 Orthodox St., will host a meeting and lecture on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 7:30 p.m. The speaker will be historian Jeff Denman, who will discuss his new book, Philadelphia Quakers and the American Revolution, which vividly describes the precipitous rise of the Philadelphia Quakers and their fall during the American Revolution. Denman is a retired American history and geography teacher from the Brookline Public Schools in Massachusetts. He has written widely on topics in American history. Denman holds a bachelor of science degree from the University of Maine and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Connecticut.
The event is free and open to the public, and free off-street parking is available across Orthodox Street at Frankford Friends School. Run for Peace for local 9/11 victim
The 21st annual Run for Peace will take place on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 8:45 a.m. at Penn Charter, 3000 W. School House Lane in East Falls. Registration begins at 8. There is a 5K and a 1-mile family fun walk.
The event is in memory of Northwood native Peter Ortale (Penn Charter class of 1983), who was killed in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, and Kenny Caldwell (class of ‘89), who also died in the attacks. Ortale grew up on the 4900 block of Castor Ave. and attended St. Martin of Tours, Penn Charter and Duke University, where he graduated in 1987 and was a three-year All-American lacrosse player. At the time of his death, at age 37, he was working for Euro Brokers on the 84th floor of the World Trade Center’s South Tower in New York. He was among 61 employees and friends of Euro Brokers who died that day.
The cost is $25 and includes a T-shirt. Proceeds benefit scholarship funds in memory of Ortale and Caldwell.

Temple University Hospital – Jeanes Campus, through the support of the Anna T. Jeanes Foundation, is asking for applications for its 2027 Community Grant Program. Grants are awarded annually to provide funding for projects that promote the health and wellness of community residents within the hospital’s service area. Curfew, underage drinking
Curfew in Philadelphia is 9:30 p.m. for anyone 13 and under and 10 p.m. for those ages 14-17. If police pick up someone for a curfew violation in the Northeast, the young person will be taken home, to the Community Evening Resource Center at 4704 Leiper St. in Frankford or to the 2nd, 7th, 8th or 15th police districts. The penalty for a curfew violation can be up to $300.
Under state law, underage drinking is a summary offense with a $500 fine for the first violation. Anyone receiving a citation for underage drinking can be asked about it on applications for jobs, college applications and appointments to military service academies. ••
