On April 8, Race for Peace Activist Alim Howell had a virtual meeting with state Rep. Regina Young’s chief of staff, Belinda Mills, and constituent services adviser, Kevin Fassett, about public safety. The 185th Legislative District is comprised of parts of South and Southwest Philadelphia and Tinicum Township and Colwyn Borough in Delaware County.
Fassett believes that more needs to be done in legislation on the state government level with increasing public safety standards.
“In the past years the state rep has stood side by side with our youth to support their voices that were raised against police violence against the black community. Also throughout the city to promote peaceful gatherings of protesters. Armed with a message of peaceful marching. For peace not guns rallies. There should be more youth gun violence forum events because it starts with not committing crimes against one another. All these events are good with a lot of hoopla but it needs to get done better in the political process. Cracking down on the corruption against our communities,” Fassett said.
Mills wants youth to be more responsible.
“Kids seem to not care about police presence. It starts at home with the parents at an elementary school stage level age. So much crime is going on and a higher police presence is needed. Hiring more police officers needs to happen more. No one wants to be a police officer nowadays because it is draining because of the crime rate. It also goes along with us not killing us in the process,” she said.
“My father is a constituent in state Rep. Young’s district. Rep. Young is a member of the Police District Advisory Council. With our organization Race for Peace Committee there is something in common as we work together with the police hosting events and also wanting to strive to making the community a safer and better place to live. By decreasing drugs off the streets, guns and crime,” Howell said.
The mission of the Police District Advisory Council is to serve as a liaison between the community and the police to reduce the fear and incidence of crime and enhance the quality of life in communities.
