Indigenous Peoples’ Day Celebration at Penn Museum
The Penn Museum will celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day with a free family festival Saturday, Oct. 10, featuring native artists, hands-on activities, storytelling and a film screening.
The Firstival runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and includes free admission to the museum’s galleries, exhibitions and activities. The event is part of the Philadelphia Historic District’s 52 Weeks of Firsts and Penn and Philly’s 250 Years of Shared History.
Multidisciplinary artist Holly Wilson, Delaware Nation Lenape and a descendant of the Delaware Tribe of Indians, will lead an artist talk at 11:30 a.m., followed by a mask-making workshop at noon. Wilson’s “Native Futurism,” a large-scale installation at the museum’s East Entrance, includes a 20-foot painting of children catching fireflies, photographs of plants indigenous to the Philadelphia region and archival images of Lenape people.
Other activities include a family experience in the Native North America Gallery at 1:30 p.m. and a Wampum bracelet workshop at 2 p.m. A screening of “In Pursuit: Philadelphia and the Making of America” begins at 3 p.m., followed by a panel discussion. ••
Over $3.5M in grants coming to Waxman’s district
More than $3.5 million in state grant funding is headed to 13 projects in Rep. Ben Waxman’s Center City district, including improvements at several Philadelphia cultural, recreational and community institutions.
Waxman announced $3,539,211 in Local Share Account funding Sept. 15. The grants include $530,794 for drainage and soil restoration at the Palumbo Recreation Center field, $350,000 for turfgrass at the Marian Anderson Recreation Center and $500,000 for enhanced lighting in Rittenhouse Square.
Other awards include $425,000 for elevator modernization at Moore College of Art and Design, $400,000 to renovate Charles Albert Tindley’s study and living quarters at Tindley Temple United Methodist Church and $203,683 for elevator modernization at Philadelphia Theatre Company.
The Philadelphia Clef Club of the Performing Arts also will receive $250,000 in funding secured with House Appropriations Chairman Jordan Harris to renovate its cultural facility.
“This $3.5 million in funding will directly support organizations that are doing the work of creating community in our neighborhoods,” Waxman said.
The Local Share Account program is funded by gaming revenue and supports economic development, infrastructure and community projects. ••
