The Sound of Philadelphia (TSOP)
The 1970s soul music genre was practically defined by the pioneering work of Philadelphia International Records, co-founded by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. The O’Jays, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes and Teddy Pendergrass were just a few of the iconic artists who created the soulful “Sound of Philadelphia.”
Hall & Oates
The dynamic duo of Daryl Hall and John Oates achieved immense success with their soulful pop-rock sound. Hits like “Maneater” and “Rich Girl” earned them a permanent spot in the Pop Music Hall of Fame.
Philadelphia Soul
In addition to TSOP, the city gave birth to the Philly Soul genre, characterized by lush orchestration and smooth vocal harmonies. The Stylistics, Patti LaBelle and Billy Paul were among the influential artists who shaped this distinctive musical style.
Will Smith
Before he became a Hollywood heavyweight, Will Smith, a Philadelphia native, rose to fame as part of the hip-hop duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. Smith’s charisma and lyrical prowess catapulted him into a successful solo career, making him a household name in both music and film.
Gambling with Jazz
Philadelphia has a deep-rooted connection to jazz, with luminaries like John Coltrane and Dizzy Gillespie hailing from the city. Their groundbreaking contributions to the world of jazz continue to influence musicians across genres.
Questlove and The Roots
The Roots, led by drummer and producer Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, are celebrated for their innovative fusion of hip-hop, soul and jazz. As the house band for “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” they’ve brought their Philly flavor to a global audience.
Meek Mill
Hailing from North Philadelphia, Meek Mill has become a prominent figure in contemporary hip-hop. Known for his powerful lyrics and socially conscious messages, Meek Mill has made a significant impact on the rap scene.
Jill Scott
