Holmesburg Civic Association last week approved two zoning requests, one for a church expansion and the other for a day care.

Shalom Pentecostal Church operates out of 7315-19 State Road and is looking to take over the site at 7309-11 State Road, a former used car business. The church plans to use the new site for educational purposes.

Services are on Sunday mornings and evenings, and a youth group meets on Tuesdays and Fridays.

The church has letters of support from its commercial neighbors.

The church was represented by attorney Brandon Savran, of Dilworth Paxson.

The civic group voted 10-0 to not oppose the proposal.

Meanwhile, attorney Joe Console represented the owner of a proposed day care at 8015-21 Frankford Ave., the site of a former physical therapy business.

The day care would accommodate up to 20 kids and needs approval because a portion of its rear parking lot is zoned residential.

The youngsters would enter and exit the building from the rear, not along busy Frankford Avenue.

The proposal was approved in a show of hands.

In other news from the March 11 meeting:

• Stan Cywinski represented City Councilman Mike Driscoll, while Elijah Wilson represented state Sen. Joe Picozzi.

Cywinski said speed cameras are coming soon to Frankford Avenue, and that police will monitor aggressive driving on Academy Road.

Wilson invited constituents to visit Picozzi’s office at 12361 Academy Road.

• A couple of people complained about double parking on the 3500 block of Oakmont St.

• The Star Players, of the city Department of Parks and Recreation, will present Honk! The Ugly Duckling Musical on May 30-31 and June 1, at 7 p.m., at Venice Island Performing Arts Center, 7 Lock St., in Manayunk. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Group rates are available. Tickets can be purchased on Venmo @TheStarplayers or at Holmesburg Recreation Center, 4500 Rhawn St. For more information, follow @starplayersPPR on X, like the group’s page on Facebook or contact director Bill Arthur at 215-685-8714 or Starplayers2013@gmail.com. ••
