Crime down in most categories in 15th

Capt. Marques Newsome, commander of the 15th Police District, told the 15th Police District Advisory Council that crime is down in most categories, other than residential burglaries.

The meeting took place on Oct. 28. A day earlier, Newsome said there was a shooting on the 4700 block of Torresdale Ave. following a dispute between two males over a car. One man was shot twice in the hip. An arrest was made.

Newsome also mentioned that a serial robber is believed to be responsible for 11 crimes since Sept. 21. Twice, he’s targeted the Acme at 6601 Roosevelt Blvd. and the Boston Market at 6350 Roosevelt Blvd. The ShopRite at 5597 Tulip St. has also been hit.

Also attending the meeting was Capt. Marc Metellus, commander of the Police Athletic League and former commander of the 2nd Police District. There are 18 PAL centers in Philadelphia, but the only one in the Northeast is at 4401 Aldine St. Money is trying to be secured to reopen Gibbons PAL, which closed in 2016, at 6901 Rising Sun Ave.

In other news:

• A woman complained of pot smoking and loud music in the middle of the night coming from a house on the 3300 block of Ashville St. (near Crispin Street). The owner does not have a rental license, subjecting him to a daily fine of $300 from the city Department of Licenses and Inspections.

There were also complaints of people double parking on streets, including when there are open parking spots, and Asians walking onto people’s porches to take their recyclables.

• The 15th PDAC will meet on Monday, Nov. 25, at 7 p.m. at Mayfair Community Center, 2990 St. Vincent St. The guest will be April Street, of the Register of Wills office. ••
