Six area high school basketball players will play in the Philadelphia Building Trades’ All Star Labor Classic, which will take place on Sunday, April 13, at Holy Family University.
Mayor Cherelle Parker will once again toss up the opening tip.
Local players are Kevin Beck and Kiev Rucker, both of Father Judge, which won the Catholic League and PIAA Class 6A championships; Brandon Russell, of Archbishop Ryan; Shamar Parker, of Fels; Abby Rock, of Nazareth Academy; and Gabby Bowes, of Germantown Academy.
The hoops fun begins at noon with the Labor All Stars vs. Media/Alumni/Elected Officials All Stars. Retired Channel 6 Action News reporter Vernon Odom will coach the Media/Alumni/Elected Officials. Wayne Miller, business manager of Sprinkler Fitters Local 692, returns as the Labor coach.
The City Girls vs. Suburban Girls is up next at 1:15 p.m. The City Boys vs. Suburban Boys follows at 2:30.
All high school players were invited to the Sprinkler Fitters Hall on Thursday night for a dinner and presentation of a $500 college scholarship.
At Sunday’s games, admission is free and open to the public. Food and refreshments will be available for purchase.
Proceeds from sponsorships of the All Star Labor Classic will benefit The Superhero Project nonprofit, which supports parents of prematurely born babies and all newborns facing medical challenges. The Building Trades raised $228,000 for the Superhero Project..
