The Disston Elementary School playground was recently the site of an event that featured bookbag giveaways and other resources.
CORA Services, Barbera’s on the Boulevard and state Rep. Jared Solomon handed out bookbags during the Aug. 14 event at Disston, 6801 Cottage St. That was just 10 days before the opening of public schools.
Car dealer Gary Barbera was joined by the Barbera Bear.
The day also featured diaper giveaways, a DJ, a prize wheel, haircuts, water ice, pretzels and vendors.
Vendors included Philly Reading Coaches, which is looking for volunteers for the 2026-27 school year. Each coach reads one-on-one with a K-3rd grader for at least one hour per week after school. Visit ost.phila.gov/philly-reading-coaches or email PRC@phila.gov ••
