Target employees spent a recent day volunteering at Philabundance’s South Philadelphia warehouse, packing 488 boxes of food that will be distributed through the nonprofit’s network serving families across the Greater Philadelphia region.
The effort builds on Target’s partnership with Philabundance’s Retail Rescue program, which redirects surplus food from retailers to local food pantries and shelters. Last year, Target donated nearly 1.9 million pounds of food through the program. Since 2016, the retailer has donated about 12.6 million pounds that otherwise may have gone to landfills.
“We are deeply grateful for our partnership with Target, which has been participating in our Retail Rescue program for 10 years,” Philabundance CEO Loree Jones Brown said. “Today, we are also thankful for the Target team members who are working hard repacking and sorting food to keep our neighbors fed.”
Philabundance said nearly one in four Philadelphians experiences food insecurity. Through its network across nine counties in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, the organization distributed more than 36 million meals last year. ••
