The first Basil Merenda Achievement Award was given to a local student on March 21 at St. Gabriel Parish in Grays Ferry.
Jaquel Young, of the second graduating class of St. Gabriel’s Youth Skills Building Program, was presented with the award named in honor of Commissioner Basil Merenda, of the city Department of Licenses and Inspections, Safety and Compliance Division, in appreciation of his support and dedication to the program. Merenda is a lifelong Grays Ferry resident, former student of the school and active St. Gabriel Parish member.
Young, a standout student, was recognized for his exemplary professional skills, integrity and conduct.
The Youth Skills Building Program is designed to prepare young adults for the future by providing essential life skills, practical knowledge and emotional intelligence. Through structured workshops and hands-on activities, students gain experience in areas such as financial literacy, carpentry and social-emotional learning, fostering a well-rounded approach to personal and professional development.
Merenda has played a key role in supporting the program. Under his leadership, L&I ISC inspectors have engaged with YSBP participants, sharing their personal experiences and professional insights to demonstrate how the skills taught in the program can positively impact students’ futures.
