On March 29, the office of state Rep. Elizabeth Fiedler hosted a Job Fair at Mt. Enon Baptist Church on Snyder Avenue. Eighteen local groups were in attendance to talk with over a hundred South Philadelphians about new employment and to share information and career advice.

The goal of the event was to connect community members with careers in local unions, businesses and public service. Jobseekers of all ages and with a range of work experience came prepared to network and submit their resumes in business attire.

“Reaching out to the community and helping our neighbors meet their needs is a top priority of my office, and our job fair was a step in that direction,” Fiedler said. “My hope is that we can help people do even more than find a job — that they can also find a fulfilling path that allows them to thrive and support their families, right here in South Philly.”

Some organizations present, like the Seafarers International Union, Sheetmetal Workers Local 19 and Job Corps, used the opportunity to promote their apprenticeship and job training programs. Other groups like PA Careerlink were on site to offer jobseekers comprehensive employment resources and advice.

The Job Fair was hosted at Mt. Enon Church with the help of Pastor Sherrill and the volunteers of the church. Fiedler’s office plans to host more events in the future, including a free shredding day on May 10 at South Philadelphia High School from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
