In a city that has produced boxing champions like Joe Frazier and Bernard Hopkins, there’s no question that the sport has deep roots in our community. I mean, who doesn’t have the image of Rocky running through the Italian Market engrained in their memories? Be it for sport or entertainment, it is obvious that boxing requires a grit that makes its athletes unique.
Over a decade ago, director Francesco Saviano began exploring these athletes. His project culminated in the new film On the Line, which follows the boxing careers of Will “Power” Rosinsky, Danny “The Miracle Man” Jacobs and Patrick “All” Day in their pursuit of the title “world champion.” The documentary captures the highs, the lows and the lives that exist outside the ropes.
Each athlete has his own experience inside and outside of the ring. Rosinsky, a New York City firefighter, won the New York Golden Gloves four times. From 2008 to 2015, he won 19 out of 22 fights.
Jacobs, who competed from 2007 to 2024, held World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation middleweight titles throughout his career. His rightfully earned nickname as “The Miracle Man” came from his 2011 battle with osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer, that almost forced his exit from the sport.
Patrick Day’s story sheds light on the more difficult moments involved in this highly physical sport. During a 2019 fight, Day suffered a traumatic brain injury during a knockout loss that, ultimately, led to his death four days later.
The film shares the personal and professional struggles that shaped each of these men’s careers in a profoundly intimate way. Executive producer Vincent Piazza explained that by braiding the three fighters’ stories together, the film explores broader themes of fate, destiny and life rather than focusing strictly on boxing. A primary goal for the directors was to make the subject matter accessible to non-boxing fans by establishing the vernacular of the sport in the film’s first act.
Piazza, a Villanova alum, worked with the Philadelphia Film Society and the Philadelphia Museum of Art to offer the film to the community. “This is a just an honest-to-goodness story about people, and I feel like … that might be a splash of cold water and refreshing,” promoted Piazza.
