South Street will say “Guten Tag” to visitors on May 4 as Maifest takes over South Philly’s iconic avenue.

Brauhaus Schmitz, the renowned German restaurant and beer hall, will offer an authentic taste of Germany on May 4 as the 700 block of South Street will be closed down to traffic for the 11th Annual Maifest spring festival and block party.

From 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., an all-day, all-ages celebration will feature authentic German culture, live music, delicious food and, of course, lots of German beer. Maifest, also known as May Day, is a German tradition that welcomes the arrival of spring.

“Brauhaus Schmitz is proud to bring this tradition to the heart of Philadelphia’s South Street district for an unforgettable day of fun and merriment,” said Brauhaus Schmitz owner Doug Hager. “Our block party has become a cherished tradition for locals and visitors alike, and we can’t wait to celebrate with South Street and our community. Come raise a liter with us under the giant Maypole.”

It’s not just a giant Maypole, it’s the largest in Pennsylvania. And the event, which brings about 10,000 people annually, will feature performances by Die Heimatklange Band and United German Hungarian Dance group. There will also be a Liter Lift Competition, Pig Roast, face painting, flower crowns, key tapping, games and fun for the whole family.

The all-day outdoor block party is free to attend, with food and drink pay as you go. VIP tickets are $100 and include food, drink and access to the Brauer Bund where you will find seating, private bathroom, an extensive German food buffet and TVs to catch sporting events of the day and the Kentucky Derby.
