St. Hubert High School recently held its annual Passionately Pink Breast Cancer Walk, held every October in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The event began with an assembly in the auditorium, followed by a few laps around the perimeter of the school and the singing of the alma mater on the front steps.

This year’s walk was dedicated in memory of Denise Anhalt, wife of Joseph Anhalt, a social studies teacher at the school. Mrs. Anhalt died of breast cancer in 2019.

Mr. Anhalt was the emcee for the assembly, with school president Lizanne Pando and principal Gina MacKenzie joining him on stage. Director of School Ministry Mary Tomczuk offered a prayer. The girls heard from Margaret Silvestri, of the nonprofit BreastCancer.org, and Sheryle Cruse, a breast cancer survivor and author of Cancerventures: Tales of a Diagnosed Woman.

State Sen. Joe Picozzi and Rep. Pat Gallagher took part in the walk.

Participants wore student-designed pink T-shirts and held pink “I walk for … “ signs.

While the walk has been an annual tradition for 20-plus years, the school has a relatively new Cancer Awareness Club, known as the Hope Squad.

At the end of the walk, Anhalt announced that – through T-shirt sales, sponsorships, a bake sale and a dress-down day – the school raised $12,000 for breast cancer awareness. ••
