Check your checklist
Many thanks to the editors of the South Philly Review for publishing the informative article by Mary Anna Rodabaugh on how homeowners should prepare for winter (“Before the first frost,” Oct. 21).
As a longtime South Philly homeowner, I found it very helpful to read this checklist of ways to get my house ready for the coming months. I went over all that and compared it to my own preparation list.
First of all, I am fortunate that my windows are all top quality and do not need reinforcing. My doors are also air tight. No leaks anywhere. So check that off.
Secondly I have a very reliable handyman who inspects my chimney and heater for problems and keeps the burner lit. My thermostat and baseboard radiators all work.
As of now, I don’t have a smoke alarm. Most of my cooking is done in a microwave, so I rarely use my gas stove. Will see how that goes.
In addition to all that, I have a well-fortified aluminum roof thanks to a very skillful roofer. So I have no leaks anywhere. No drafts, either.
So I totally agree with the author that living in my South Philly neighborhood is a benefit beyond words. Help is always available.
