The Lawncrest Community Association welcomed Angela Scott, of the nonprofit Philadelphia Corporation for Aging, to its recent meeting.
Scott explained that PCA’s 30-plus programs are income-eligible, except for Meals on Wheels.
Among the services at PCA that Scott mentioned are assistance to caregivers and funding for people who care for their grandchildren. PCA also focuses on areas such as nutrition, home-delivered meals, health and wellness, transportation, home repairs and modifications and employment/job training.
Scott said people can call the PCA helpline at 215-765-9040 for more information.
PCA has been an established Area Agency on Aging since 1973. The agency’s website is PCACares.org
In other news from the Oct. 15 meeting:
• The LCA observed a moment of silence for Pope Leo, recently diagnosed with lung cancer.
• Lt. Eric Brooks, of the 2nd Police District, provided a crime update.
• State Sen. Sharif Street addressed the group. He’s not up for re-election this year, though he lost a primary for Congress in May. He’s hoping Democrats take control of the state Senate for the first time since 1994.
Street hopes Pennsylvania closes the so-called “Delaware Loophole,” which allows multi-state corporations to shift profits to other states, such as Delaware, which does not have a corporate income tax on out-of-state earnings.
As for possible data center construction, Street said he would oppose higher consumer utility bills such as electricity. He said the state Public Utility Commission could stop any increase.
Street blamed the Trump administration for funding cuts that he said have resulted in Pennsylvania having a structural budget deficit, all the while giving tax breaks to billionaires. If Democrats take control of the U.S. House or Senate, Street hopes the cuts are restored.
The state has been increasing the amount of money it gives to public education, but Street said the pace of the increases has been “unacceptable.”
Street said he hopes that, whenever the state agrees to tax and regulate illegal skill games, some of the money will be directed to mass transit. One LCA member said he hoped VFW and American Legion posts that have skill games are not unfairly taxed.
