Treasury outreach team reunites residents with $1.4 million this summer
State Treasurer Stacy Garrity announced that more than $1.4 million – including $379,065.91 in southeastern Pennsylvania – in unclaimed property has been reunited with Pennsylvanians as part of a statewide “Claim Your Unclaimed Property” initiative that included 35 events across the state this summer. Since taking office in 2021, Garrity has returned more than $1.2 billion in unclaimed property, including a record of over $334 million last year.
“Every day our outreach team is connecting with Pennsylvanians and reuniting them with unclaimed property, and this summer’s targeted campaign was a huge success across the state,” Garrity said. “It’s one of my top priorities to return unclaimed property, and meeting folks in their own backyards has proven time and time again to be a fantastic way to reunite them with money that is rightfully theirs.”

State dollars for Caring for Friends, SPIN
Senator Joe Picozzi (R-5) and Representative Martina White (HD-170) announced nearly $2 million in Local Share Account grant funding for two organizations serving the Northeast. The awards went to Caring for Friends, $1 million to support the expansion of the organization’s Cold Storage Facility Project, and Special People In Northeast, $917,450 to support the purchase and installation of generators to ensure services can continue during outages and emergencies.
“Caring for Friends and SPIN are two organizations that the Northeast is lucky to have,” Picozzi said. “They do so much for our neighbors, and this funding will help them continue that work and serve even more people. This is exactly where these dollars should be going – right back into our community.”
“The grants awarded today empower our community to take meaningful steps forward,” White said. “These investments reflect our commitment to supporting trusted organizations that lift up neighbors in need. I appreciated the opportunity to advocate for this important funding.” ••
Funding for Glen Foerd, St. Hubert, Tacony Boat Launch
State Rep. Pat Gallagher and state Sen. Joe Picozzi announced that three projects in the 173rd Legislative District have been awarded a combined $1,08 million in funding. Receiving funding are Glen Foerd, $398,479 to modernize utilities and install essential safety systems in its historic Carriage House; St. Hubert High School, $187,760 for improvements to the perimeter of its campus; and Delaware River City Corp., $500,000 toward construction improvements at the Tacony Boat Launch.
“I’m proud to see these investments coming back to our community,” Gallagher said. “Glen Foerd, St. Hubert and the Tacony Boat Launch are all important assets in Northeast Philadelphia. These projects will improve our schools and community facilities while expanding opportunities for residents to enjoy our parks, trails and Delaware River waterfront.” ••

Temple University Hospital Jeanes Campus will receive $812,240 to replace outdated 2D mammography equipment with 3D digital breast tomosynthesis equipment.

Exhibit on 1876 centennial
The Frankford Historical Society, 1507 Orthodox St., is hosting an ongoing exhibit. Using historic maps, photographs, artifacts and documents, Frankford and the 1876 Centennial provides a snapshot of Frankford at the time of the centennial. Still in the midst of an industrial depression, Frankford’s developing industries were not heavily represented at the Exhibition, but they were the heartbeat of the neighborhood. The fair offered Frankford visitors technological expertise and inspiration as well as a variety of souvenirs. Among the artifacts preserved in the Historical Society of Frankford’s collections is a rare carved chair from the Pennsylvania Pavilion, a match to ones owned by the Smithsonian Institution, the Atwater Kent holdings and in a private collection. The exhibit is open through the rest of the year during regular hours, which are Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free. ••

Curfew, underage drinking
Curfew in Philadelphia is 9:30 p.m. for anyone 13 and under and 10 p.m. for those ages 14-17. If police pick up someone for a curfew violation in the Northeast, the young person will be taken home, to the Community Evening Resource Center at 4704 Leiper St. in Frankford or to the 2nd, 7th, 8th or 15th police districts. The penalty for a curfew violation can be up to $300.
Under state law, underage drinking is a summary offense with a $500 fine for the first violation. Anyone receiving a citation for underage drinking can be asked about it on applications for jobs, college applications and appointments to military service academies. ••

State grants for projects across the Northeast
Sen. Joe Picozzi (R-5th dist.) announced the approval of $4,828,154 in additional Statewide Local Share Account grants for projects across the Northeast.
“Bringing resources back home to Northeast Philadelphia is one of the most important parts of my job,” Picozzi said. “These funds are going towards projects our neighbors will actually see and benefit from – safer streets, stronger schools, improvement to community spaces and resources for organizations doing important work every day.”
Picozzi worked alongside House and Senate colleagues for several of the projects receiving funding and thanked them for their partnership in helping move these projects forward.
“I am grateful to my colleagues who worked with me on these grants,” Picozzi said. “Getting these projects funded takes a lot of time and collaboration, and I’m glad we were able to get this done”.
The grants have been awarded to:
• Temple University Hospital – Jeanes Mammography: Picozzi and Rep. Sean Dougherty secured $812,240 for new mammography equipment and expanding access to imaging services.
• St. Hubert Catholic High School Perimeter Improvements: Picozzi and Rep. Pat Gallagher secured $187,760 for perimeter and security improvements.
• WHYY Facility Improvements: Picozzi, alongside Sens. Tina Tartaglione, Nikil Saval, Sharif Street, Art Haywood, Vincent Hughes and Anthony Williams, secured $150,000 for upgrades to their emergency warning system and related infrastructure.
• Tacony Boat Launch: Picozzi and Rep. Pat Gallagher secured $500,000 to expand recreational access to the Delaware River waterfront.
• Advancing Accessibility Through ADA Ramp Construction: Picozzi, alongside Reps. Ed Neilson and Sean Dougherty, secured $968,273 for construction of ADA curb ramps at 10 intersections along Convent Avenue, along with water infrastructure and drainage improvements.
• Philadelphia Northeast Airport – Runway 15-33, Package 2: Picozzi and Rep. Regina Young secured $1 million to rehabilitate Runway 15-33 including runway and taxiway work, pavement markings, draining and lighting improvements.
• Mobile Estates Services Van: Picozzi, alongside Sens. Tina Tartaglione, Nikil Saval, Sharif Street, Art Haywood, Vincent Hughes and Anthony Williams, secured $98,767 for the purchase and outfitting of a mobile van to bring Register of Wills and Clerk of Courts services directly into Philadelphia communities.
• PATH: Picozzi and Rep. Sean Dougherty secured $300,000 for their Community Inclusion Transportation Initiative.
• Glen Foerd: Picozzi, alongside Rep. Pat Gallagher, secured $398,479 for renovations to modernize the historic Carriage Housing, including utility upgrades that will support expanded public access and educational use.
• JEVS Orleans Technical College: Picozzi and Rep. Ed Neilson secured $362,089 for phase 2 security system and IT upgrades as well as improvement to network speed, security and reliability throughout the campus.
• The Career Wardrobe: Picozzi, alongside Sens. Tracy Pennycuick, Nikil Saval, Art Haywood, Vincent Hughes, Sharif Street, Anthony Williams, Maria Collett, Amanda Cappelletti, John Kane, Tim Kearney, Carolyn Comitta and Katie Muth, secured $50,546 for their regional clothing distribution van project. ••
Sam Katz at Historical Society of Frankford meeting
The Historical Society of Frankford, 1507 Orthodox St., will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 13. Doors open at 7 p.m. The program begins at 7:30. Sam Katz, president of History Making Productions, will present episode 7, Renewal, of his series Philadelphia and the Making of America. The film explores Philadelphia from 1925 to 1963, a period shaped by the Great Depression, World War II, political transformation and ambitious efforts to remake the city.
