Bustleton Library programs

The library will host Stitching Legacy on Tuesday, Aug. 11, at 3:30 p.m. Fiber artists will help people create a community art piece that is reflective of the Bustleton Library community then and now. Students who participate will be offered volunteer hours.
Bustleton Library will hold a book club meeting on Thursday, Aug. 20, at 11 a.m. The book to be discussed is Kin, by Tayari Jones. In Kin, Vernice and Annie grow up as motherless neighbors and close friends in Honeysuckle, Louisiana, but their lives diverge as they reach adulthood. Vernice, raised by a protective aunt, leaves for Spelman College, where she becomes part of an influential community of black women and confronts new experiences shaped by privilege, ambition and social inequality. Annie, driven by the desire to find the mother who abandoned her, embarks on a journey marked by instability, risk and emotional discovery, ultimately facing life-threatening circumstances. The novel explores themes of motherhood, friendship, identity and the social complexities of womanhood in the American South. Copies of the book are available to borrow. ••
State money for St. Hubert performing arts center
Senator Picozzi announced $500,000 in Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program funding has been awarded to St. Hubert High School to support renovations of its performing arts center, which opened in January with a $1 million donation by graduate Susan Anderson and her husband Jim. The state money will go to improvements to the auditorium lobby and entrance, cafeteria, bathrooms, dance center and music room, along with ADA accessibility upgrades. Picozzi thanked state Rep. Pat Gallagher for his partnership in securing the funds.
“St. Hubert’s is one of those institutions that has stood the test of time because of the impact it has on students and families,” Picozzi said. “I’m proud to help secure this investment so future generations of Bambies can continue building on that tradition of excellence for years to come”.
“Our partnerships with the community are very important to us. We are so thankful to Sen. Picozzi for his vision and support of our renovations to bring upgraded facilities to host community events like St. Hubert blood drives, craft and vendor fairs, concerts, school plays, college fairs and the like,” said school president Lizanne Pando. ••

Curfew, underage drinking
Curfew in Philadelphia is 9:30 p.m. for anyone 13 and under and 10 p.m. for those ages 14-17. If police pick up someone for a curfew violation in the Northeast, the young person will be taken home, to the Community Evening Resource Center at 4704 Leiper St. in Frankford or to the 2nd, 7th, 8th or 15th police districts. The penalty for a curfew violation can be up to $300.
Under state law, underage drinking is a summary offense with a $500 fine for the first violation. Anyone receiving a citation for underage drinking can be asked about it on applications for jobs, college applications and appointments to military service academies. ••

Ukrainian Folk Festival
