State Rep. Elizabeth Fiedler presented local organization BAKERHOOPS with a $50,000 check on March 26 from the Department of Education.

The funding will help BAKERHOOPS strengthen its services, which includes basketball training along with mentorship, career and emotional support for Philly youth.

“Local programs like BAKERHOOPS are so important for keeping our kids active, safe and engaged,” Fiedler said. “I was so glad to help BAKERHOOPS receive this funding so they can keep doing this work that is really impactful – and fun.”

Based at 3rd and Shunk streets, BAKERHOOPS is at the heart of a neighborhood that has tight-knit intergenerational bonds, but that also struggles with housing instability, poverty and violence. Since introducing its program several years ago, BAKERHOOPS has contributed to the de-escalation of tensions and violence prevention — all while training some of the area’s best young athletes.

Present at the ceremony were co-founders Gabriel and Alena Baker, Senior Head Coach Howard Briskin, Amaris Baker, Gabriel Baker Jr. and BAKERHOOPS coaches and staff. Drexel women’s basketball head coach Amy Mallon was also in attendance to show her support.
