We are the champions

It was such a thrill to read the report by Mark Zimmaro about this year’s state high school basketball championship winners (“State champs x2 for Neumann-Goretti,” April 9). As an alumna of a time when the school was for girls only, it gives me great pride to know that today’s co-ed school can boast of such a wonderful achievement.

What makes this honor so amazing is that both boys and girls teams are returning champions. According to Zimmaro’s report, both teams repeated a simultaneous state championship that they won just three years ago. Really what are the odds of such a feat?

Another amazing fact is that each team has its own coach. The boys have Coach Carl Arrigale, and the girls team is under the leadership of Andrea Peterson. Congratulations to both of them!

I am just so proud of the way my old all-girls school has continued to exist, not only as a co-ed institution, but to produce such superb achievements like repeated state athletic championships for both genders. Am so glad I can still cheer these accomplishments over 60 years since I graduated in the first class.

So, again, my thanks to the South Philly Review and excellent reporter Mark Zimmaro for providing this historic news of a record achievement by an outstanding Catholic high school for girls and boys. Bravo. Goooo Saints!
