The Greater Bustleton Civic League last week listened to two zoning proposals.
Members voted 25-0 to support a variance for the homeowner of a corner property on the 9300 block of Clark St. The issue involved the removal of the garage door, which is considered the removal of a parking space. A Zoning Board of Adjustment hearing is scheduled for March 26.
Members were not too enthusiastic about an effort by the owner of a vehicle repair shop at 9909 Northeast Blvd. seeking to be able to sell and rent vehicles. One woman complained that the company – formerly a Meineke Car Care Center – works loudly around the clock. The owner, though, said cars are not dropped off by tow trucks after 7 p.m. Attorney Andrea Salomon sensed members were not going to approve the change and, since the ZBA hearing date is not until April 23, plans to come back to the next meeting with more answers to some of their questions.
In other news from the Feb. 25 meeting:
• The 7th Police District was represented by Capt. Steven O’Brien, recently recovered from pneumonia, and community relations officer Al Fiorentino.
O’Brien said there was a robbery on the 9900 block of Bustleton Ave., in the McDonald’s parking lot. A man pushed someone to the ground and demanded $500. O’Brien said there were commercial burglaries at the state liquor store at 8204 Roosevelt Blvd. and at We Buy Everything at 1900 Grant Ave.
Fiorentino said faraday bags are available at the district, 1701 Bowler St. Faraday bags are made with materials that, among other things, help prevent car thefts by blocking the signal from your key fob so that thieves can’t pick it up. Car owners place their keys in the bags at home so thieves cannot take advantage of the push-button start option to steal the vehicle.
• Among those on hand were Charlie Kueny, president of the Greater Northeast Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce; Alice Udovich, an aide to City Councilman Brian O’Neill; Bob Stewart, of the office of Register of Wills John Sabatina; and Viktor Kagan, who works for state Rep. Sean Dougherty.
Kagan said Dougherty’s office is at 7801 Hasbrook Ave., the same one occupied by former Rep. Kevin Boyle. The phone number is 215-331-2600. Dougherty will be holding a shredding event on March 22 at PATH, 1919 Cottman Ave.
